Getting to Know Jack Handforth

What’s your role at PAFC Displays and what does a typical day look like for you?

I am chief flag waver, and my day would be playing football in the morning and then coming straight from a match, getting a pasty, then checking everything is out for the game that is about to start.
After the game, I help put the flags used away and then put the drum away (which I think is the most important part!).

How did you first get involved with PAFC Displays or the club?

I got involved in PAFC Displays by being dragged along by my dad one evening about 3 or 4 years ago.

What’s your favourite part of working at Home Park on a matchday?

Building a great relationship with the players and staff at the club and feeling the buzz of passion and excitement of the fans!

Is there a particular display or moment you’ve worked on that you’re especially proud of?

The display I’m most proud of is the Liverpool display because of the countless nights after school we spent setting it up and making it good.
Another part of this was having my first news interview by Jackie Bird!

What’s one thing people might not realise goes into creating the displays?

How much money it all costs and how much time and effort we put into it in our free time.

What’s been your most memorable matchday while working with the team?

When we beat Liverpool 1-0 in the FA Cup in Round 4.
This is my most memorable matchday because I got to see the display we worked really hard on, and I got to do the guard of honour — which is now one of my favourite memories!

How long have you been a fan?

I have been an Argyle fan since 2017, when my first match was Argyle vs Morecambe.
The score was 1–0 to the Greens, and our goal scorer was the mighty Graham Carey — who has an amazing flag Nick has made!
The attendance was 8,785, which is just over half of what it would be now!

What’s one thing you’ve learned since joining PAFC Displays?

That it takes a lot more hard work and preparation behind the scenes than you would think.

If someone wanted to get involved with the group, what would you tell them?

It’s a lot of hard work, but it pays off and is fun!
Another thing is — you make lots of new friends along the way!
